Overview
What is Public Health?

Public Health works to PREVENT and mitigate disease and disability in the population. When public health works correctly, you will not even notice its existence. Clean drinking water, safe food, and control of disease are public health objectives that are always at work. Public health is always preparing for what might come next while also improving our health in the present. Reduction of tobacco use, safety belt use, and promotion of healthy lifestyles are some of the current public health initiatives.

The Monroe County Health Department was established in 1942 with only 10 staff. Currently staff fill the equivalent of 45 full time positions and provide numerous services to the community. The Monroe County Health Department seeks to promote and improve the health of all residents. The Monroe County Health Department offers programs in four main areas: health promotion and disease prevention, maternal and child health services, clinic services, and environmental health services. Other divisions at the health department include Administration and Public Health Emergency Preparedness.
