County Burial Benefits

The Monroe County Department of Veterans Affairs assists veterans and surviving spouses with burial expenses. To qualify, the veteran must have an Honorable Discharge with at least 90 days of recognized war time service and at the time of the of veteran's death, assets are less than $40,000, not including a home of residence.

The county will provide a one time payment of $300 toward burial expenses and $50 toward the cost of installing a military government marker at the veteran's gravesite. There is no cost for the military marker. Spouses of veterans are not eligible for a military government marker.

To apply for these benefits, you will need the following documents:

  • Military Discharge (DD-214 or equivalent)
  • Certified Death Certificate
  • Itemized Funeral Bill

Please bring these documents to the Monroe County Department of Veterans Affairs office.
