The office of County Treasurer was established by the Michigan State Constitution.  The Treasurer is an elected official and serves a 4-year term.  The duties and powers of the County Treasurer are provided by state law.

The County Treasurer is the custodian of all county funds, and is responsible for the collection of delinquent real property taxes.  This includes the foreclosure and sale of property for the non-payment of taxes.

Other Services and Duties:

  • Issue Tax Certifications for deed recording – $5.00 for up to 25 parcels per document.

  • Manage and invest all county funds. (Investment Policy)
  • Issue bills or refunds for tax adjustments ordered by the Michigan Tax Tribunal, State Tax Commission, or local Boards of Review.
  • Clean up neighborhoods by demolishing unsafe foreclosed buildings, arranging for asbestos removal, and sometimes even environmental cleanups.
  • Track changes in Taxable Values, and report those changes to the Michigan Department of Education, which affects the state aid monies that school districts receive.
